Marginalia

Marginal territories were better defined before they began to encroach on the central. Then some of us inside the walls started living with a double consciousness that made us illegitimate in our own eyes. And even this was a kind of luxury, we told ourselves. We knew our cornerstones were cracked, then sought justice in the cracks. There’s a price to pay for everyone, we said, now we too must become the downtrodden. We must crack the rest of the stones from within, become the cracked stones, become the cracks.
